In response to the "distressing increase in reports of employers or others seeking to gain inappropriate access to people's Facebook profiles or private information," the company's director of privacy Erin Egan says in a blog post today that Facebook will "take action to protect the privacy and security of our users, whether by engaging policymakers or, where appropriate, by initiating legal action."

Facebook Privacy is Beyond Facebook's Control    permalink
Facebook's response to others' intrusion into their users' privacy is understandable, if a bit ironic. Facebook is forever doing its own careful dance around privacy; it doesn't need others (like employers, credit scorers, etc.) to push public opinion against it. But, the demon has been let out of the box. We're facing a trend that can't be stemmed with a deterrent as lame as the assertion of a user agreement.
