Shares in the computer giant Apple hit a record high as its latest version of the iPad proved to be in hot demand.

Customers lined the streets to pick up the first examples of the tablet's third incarnation. It has a more powerful processor and screen and a better camera.

Apple stock has shot up 45 per cent this year. One share is now considerably more expensive than an iPad.
